House in Quincampoix Fleuzy, Normandy

This house was commissioned after the client saw the Shed project and the drawings for the 1st European Solar Housing Competition. The site in Normandy was ideally oriented for Type 1 design, and it was adapted for the local construction methods and the preferences of Mr and Mrs Townley. They preferred a construction using cavity insulated blockwork and a concrete "Trombe" wall all along the upper side of the greenhouse, over the doors.
At first they had insulated shutters in the greenhouse, horizontal in summer, and dropped at night in winter to shut off the heated living areas. But they found that the heat loss at night was too great and glazed doors were added, ass originally planned. Heating was by a wood burning stove in the living area.
